Three comfortable observation huts by the water
De Luysen Sint-Maartensheide nature reserve is best known for its three well-equipped observation huts by the ponds. With evocative names such as De Wielewaal, Roerdomp and IJsvogel, they are well known in Flanders and the Netherlands, but German photography enthusiasts have also found their way here.

Birds everywhere, but other animals too
Some local birdwatchers have their regular spot here every week. Be sure to talk to them! Apart from some incredible images of ospreys, kingfishers, water rails, bitterns, little bitterns, etc., which they will proudly show you, they will undoubtedly have valuable tips about the animals that can be spotted at that moment. It's not just birds that take centre stage here. Sometimes red deer, which still live in the wild here, appear on the scene, or a wild boar with her young can be seen on the island in front of the middle hut.

Photography within walking distance
These locations are within walking distance of the Luysmolen holiday home, about a half-hour walk from the property. If this is a bit too long for you, drive a few kilometres further to the car park at Mariahof and start your photography session there.
