Successful species
The tree frog is making a comeback in Flanders. At the end of the last century, the animal was almost extinct, but in recent decades it has been making a remarkable comeback. The Kempenbroek has become a bastion for this cuddly species. On some balmy spring evenings, you could almost imagine yourself in the tropical rainforest when you take a trip to the Luysen or Sint-Maartensheide. With a bit of luck, you won't even have to leave the door of the De Luysmolen holiday home. The little creature has taken over the immediate surroundings of the house. The small pool just behind the garden, which Natuurpunt recently cleared of tall willow saplings, will certainly contribute to this. A strong and healthy population of this popular little creature can also be found in the nearby Smeetshof.

Challenge for nature photographers
Photographing this frog is quite a challenge. Its small size, ranging from a few centimetres to a thumb, and its excellent camouflage make it difficult to find. Focus on its distinctive call and look for the blackberry leaves and reeds where they warm themselves in the sun. With a little patience, practice and luck, you will succeed.
