Deer rut in the Weerterbos

Deer rut in the Weerterbos

When the first wisps of mist cast a mystical haze over the Kempenbroek in autumn, the red deer prepare for the annual spectacle of the rut. This is when they are most visible!

Three weeks of spectacle guaranteed!

In late summer and early autumn, wisps of mist drift across the Kempenbroek. This is the moment when rutting stags try to win the hinds for themselves. Not such an easy task, because as a young buck you have to defy the local stag, or “the big boss”.

The latter will do everything in his power to keep the herd for himself and, if necessary, will not shy away from a duel with his rivals. This is not without risk, as these fights are sometimes a matter of life and death. The animals themselves are aware of this, which is why only the strongest males who are a match for the leading stag will take up the challenge. Often, it remains at a lot of shouting and showing off, with ferns and grasses in their antlers, and a real confrontation does not take place. Spectacle is guaranteed.

Deer rut in Nederweert

If you want to experience this event live, it is best to book Holiday Home De Luysmolen between mid-September and the first week of October. The animals live in complete freedom in the nearby Stamprooierbroek and the Luysen itself, but are difficult to find in the endless marshes. If you want to experience the spectacle from the viewing platform, it is best to go to the nearby Weerterbos. The deer there come from a reintroduction project and live in a 170-hectare natural domain, where they behave completely naturally.

Viewing platform on the observation tower

From the high observation tower on the edge of the open arena, you have a perfect view of the action. You can combine a visit to the deer rut with a walk in the Weerterbos or drive directly to the tower. In and around the Weerterbos, there are two pleasant restaurants where you can enjoy a quiet bite to eat before or after your visit.

LeefJeNatuur also organises guided tours on request. If you would like to book a tour or receive more information, please contact us.
