Het Kempenbroek is de thuisbasis van heel wat zeldzame broedvogels. De vijvers van De Luysen herbergen een kolonie aalschovers en in het voorjaar kan je de mysterieuze roep van de roerdomp en woudaapjes horen. Ijsvogels, lepelaars, reigers en verschillende eendensoorten kleuren er het plaatje en in de trekperiodes passeren er geregeld de vis- en zelf zeearend. Drie uitstekend uitgeruste vogelkijkhutten van Natuurpunt Bree helpen om deze dieren zonder verstoren te bewonderen.  Dankzij een doelgericht beheer heeft zich de afgelopen decennia ook een bolwerk van grauwe klauwier op de St.- Maartensheide en het Smeetshof gevestigd.
